Readers divided on gas tax I must take issue with John McElroy's assertion that gas taxes should be raised (see WAW April '03, p.21). First, his assertion that gasoline taxes are low is suspect. Assuming that a gallon of gas costs $1.60 would mean that 40 cents of tax constitutes a 33% tax rate. This is quite high when compared to a typical 6% sales tax.
